About The Course

The Certificate IV in Fitness course will prepare you to:

  • Run a small business

Entrance Requirements

The learner group for this qualification are people wishing to gain a qualification in order to apply specialist skills to train individual clients, or groups of clients, on a one-on-one or group basis, to improve health-related components of fitness in relatively low risk situations. This includes training of older clients and children.

They have a substantial depth of knowledge to plan, conduct and evaluate exercise training; provide leadership and guidance to clients and other staff; and deal with unpredictable situations applying defined guidelines and procedures from the fitness industry and the organisation.

They work independently or with limited guidance from others and use discretion to solve non-routine problems, including monitoring and managing business activities to operate efficiently and profitably.

The learner group are those who require a structured, classroom based program with significant practical experience.

Mandatory entry requirements

Entry to this qualification is open to individuals who hold a current first aid and CPR certificate and have been recognised as competent through a recognised training program or recognition process against the following units of competency:

SISFFIT014 | Instruct exercise to older clients
SISXCCS001 | Provide quality service

Recommended entry requirements:

  • Sufficient level of language, literacy and numeracy in order to interpret documents, student guides and assessment tools, prepare written reports and plans.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills to instruct exercise programs across a wide range of clients and maintain relationships with clients of various ages and backgrounds.
  • High level of personal fitness and enthusiasm for health and fitness and helping others improve their fitness level.

Academic Entry Requirements

  • No English proficiency testing for students from English speaking nations
  • International Students from non-English speaking nations:
  • Upper intermediate level (completed)
  • Equivalent of IELTS 5.5
  • With no individual band under 5.0
  • Year 10 or equivalent and above

OR

  • A completed Certificate IV qualification from the Australian Qualifications Framework (issued within 2 years from the commencement of studies with ALG)

A prospective student does not need to provide evidence of an English test score with his/her application if one of the following applies:

  • Prospective student is a citizen and holds a passport from UK, USA, Canada, NZ or Republic of Ireland.
  • Prospective student has completed at least 5 years’ study in English in one or more of the following countries: Australia, UK, USA, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, or the Republic of Ireland.
  • In the 2 years before applying for the student visa, the prospective student completed, in Australia and in the English language, either the Senior Secondary Certificate of Education or a substantial component of a course leading to a qualification from the Australian Qualifications Framework at the Certificate IV or higher level, while the prospective student held a student visa.

The learners’ physical attributes may influence their ability to complete the training and assessment. Assessment and training requires students to be physically capable of performing a range of fitness activities and using a range of gym equipment. Manual handling is also required.

Students need to be able to relate to clients of differing ages and backgrounds, have a keen interest to assist clients to reach their exercise goals, have good problem solving skills, sound literacy and numeracy skills, be enthusiastic, tactful, patient and have a sense of humour.

The course is aimed at students 18 years of age and over.

All overseas students are required to have Overseas Students Health Cover (OSHC) insurance for the entire duration of the course. The health cover rate will vary depending on the personal circumstances and duration of stay in Australia. Read more about Overseas Students Health Cover.
